How it works

Four ways to use GrabAm.

Most marketplaces only let you wait for the right listing to appear. Here you can also bid for it, or ask for it and let sellers come to you.

01

Buy

Find it, talk the price down, then pay into escrow instead of handing cash to a stranger.

  1. 1Browse or search by campus and price
  2. 2Inquire and bargain in chat
  3. 3Pay with MoMo, held by GrabAm
  4. 4Collect, inspect, then confirm
02

Sell

List in a couple of minutes and keep the whole asking price. GrabAm takes nothing from sellers.

  1. 1Add 2 to 5 photos, price, condition
  2. 2Field offers and counter back
  3. 3Agree, then deliver or hand over
  4. 4Buyer confirms, then MoMo payout
03

Request

Can't find it? Post what you're after with a budget and let sellers bring it to you.

  1. 1Describe the item and set a bounty
  2. 2Tag your category and campus
  3. 3Sellers reply “I have this”
  4. 4Pick an offer and pay in escrow
04

Bid

Some things go to auction instead of a fixed price. Fund your wallet, bid, and the highest bid wins.

  1. 1Top up your GrabAm wallet
  2. 2Bid: the amount is reserved, not spent
  3. 3Outbid? It returns automatically
  4. 4Win, then pay within the hour
Where your money sits

The seller can't touch your cash until you have the item.

That's escrow. Payment leaves your mobile money account but stops at GrabAm. It only continues to the seller after you've received what you paid for and said so.

  1. Buyer pays Buyer

The agreed price is charged to MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money.

  2. GrabAm holds it Escrow

Funds are collected through Moolre, a Bank of Ghana licensed payment provider, and held, not forwarded.

  3. Seller hands over Seller

Delivery or pickup, arranged in chat. The seller ships knowing the money is real and committed.

  4. Buyer confirms Buyer

Inspect it first. Confirming is what releases the money, and it can't be reversed in the app. If you neither confirm nor raise an issue within 5 days of the seller handing the package to a rider, the order confirms itself so sellers aren't left unpaid indefinitely.

  5. Seller gets paid Seller

The payout lands in the seller's registered mobile money number, less fees.

If it goes wrong

Don't confirm. Open a dispute instead.

Confirming delivery is the one action that releases the money, so if the item isn't what was listed, that's exactly what you don't do. Opening a dispute keeps the funds held while both sides put evidence in front of a GrabAm admin.

  1. 01Report it in-appItem doesn't match the listing, arrived damaged, never turned up, or bad faith on either side.
  2. 02Both sides submitUnboxing photos, condition shots, chat screenshots and a written account, from buyer and seller alike.
  3. 03An admin decidesRelease to the seller, full refund, partial refund, or a return as a condition of refund.

Refunds go back through Moolre to the original payment method. Read the full Buyer Protection Policy.

Requests

Can't find it? Make sellers come to you.

Post what you're looking for with a budget attached. Sellers who have it reply with an offer, and you pick the one you want. It's the marketplace working in reverse.

Auctions

Some things shouldn't have a fixed price.

Sellers can put an item up for bidding instead of naming a price. Bids are binding and backed by real money held in your wallet, so a winning bid is a commitment, not a comment on a post.

  1. Your bid is reserved, not spent

Bidding needs a funded wallet. When you become the highest bidder, that amount moves from your available balance into a reserved balance: committed, but still yours.

  2. Outbid means refunded, instantly

The moment someone tops you, your reserved amount returns to your available balance automatically. Losing a bid never costs you anything.

  3. The reserve stays hidden

A seller can set a secret minimum. You're told only whether a reserve exists and whether it's been met. If the auction ends below it, nothing sells and no money moves.

  4. Sniping doesn't work here

A bid in the last two minutes pushes the clock back out to five. That can happen three times, so an auction ends when bidding stops, not when the timer catches you out.

  5. Win, then pay within the hour

Payment is captured straight from your reserved balance, with a countdown showing the deadline. Miss it and the item passes to the next bidder, and the forfeit is recorded against your account.

Wallet

One balance, two states.

Top up by mobile money, and your balance splits into what you can spend and what you've committed to a live bid. Available funds can be withdrawn to a registered MoMo number at any time; reserved funds unlock as soon as the bid settles.

The wallet is a stored-value balance for bidding, paying and refunds. It is not a bank account and earns no interest.

For sellers

See exactly where a listing loses people.

Selling costs 0% commission, so the only question that matters is whether your listing converts. Seller Insights shows you the drop-off between being seen, being asked about, and being bought. Per listing, not just in total.

Ask Grabby

An assistant that can actually read the marketplace.

Grabby isn't a help widget with canned answers. It searches live listings, compares them, checks your own orders and earnings, and quotes GrabAm's real policy text, then takes you to the screen you need.

  • It searches what's actually listed

Filtered by price, category and condition, then compares items side by side, finds similar ones cheaper, or lists the auctions ending soonest.

  • It knows your side of it

Your orders, offers, requests, listing performance and earnings. Ask “which listing converts best?” and it answers from your own numbers.

  • Only ever your data

Every personal query runs as you, against the same row-level security the rest of the app uses. It cannot read another user's orders. Not by policy, by construction.

  • It quotes the policy, not a paraphrase

Questions about fees, escrow or disputes are answered from GrabAm's actual policy text rather than the assistant's memory of it.

Inside the app

It's a working marketplace, not a waiting list.

Listings, offers, a requests board, a seller dashboard and escrow checkout, all live in the app today. No download needed; it runs in your browser.

Search, filter, then haggle.

The buy feed is filtered the way people actually shop on campus: by category, by campus, by whether the seller will negotiate, and by what you can afford.

  • Category chips and a campus picker
  • A max-price slider, not a wall of results
  • “Negotiable” filter for items open to offers
  • Condition shown up front: brand new to fairly used

What it costs

Sellers keep everything. Buyers pay a small fee.

GrabAm charges nothing to list and nothing to sell. The only fee is on the buyer's side, it's capped, and students pay half.

What's still limited

We'd rather tell you up front than have you find out at checkout.

  • Listings cap at GHS 5,000. A deliberate ceiling while escrow, auctions and disputes are proven out.
  • Bargaining is capped at 5 counter-offers. Enough to land on a price, not enough to waste an afternoon.
  • GhQR isn't live yet. Today it's MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money.
  • GrabAm doesn't deliver. Buyer and seller arrange delivery or pickup with in-app scheduling.
  • Wallet withdrawals are batched. Available balance can be withdrawn any time, but payouts run in batches rather than instantly.

And the rest of it

Everything below is live in the app today.

Why it's safer than a group chat

Trust you don't have to take on faith.

Every one of these is a mechanism in the product, not a promise on a landing page.

A licensed provider holds the money

Payments run through Moolre, licensed by the Bank of Ghana. GrabAm holds funds until the order completes rather than passing your cash straight to a stranger.

Your number stays yours

Buyers and sellers talk through in-app chat. Phone numbers aren't shared between users, and that chat history is your record if a deal turns sour.

Disputes run on evidence

Photo evidence is built into the app. Unboxing shots, condition photos and message history go to an admin who reviews both sides before deciding.

Ratings come from real orders

Only a completed transaction can produce a review, so a seller's rating reflects deals that actually happened rather than friends leaving stars.

Off-platform payment is a red flag

Anyone asking you to send MoMo directly to “skip fees” is asking you to give up every protection here. Report it. That\'s what the report button is for.

Confirmation is the buyer's call

Nothing releases the money except you confirming receipt. Inspect the item first. Once confirmed, it can't be undone in the app.

Questions

The things people ask first.

How does escrow actually work?
When a buyer pays, the funds are held via Moolre and are not released to the seller until the buyer confirms they've received the item. Sellers know a real payment is committed before they hand anything over; buyers aren't sending cash into a chat with no recourse.
Which payment methods can I use?
MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash and AT Money, through our payments partner Moolre. GhQR is planned but not available yet.
Do I have to be a student?
No. GrabAm started as a campus marketplace and is now open to the general public across Ghana. University tags stay as an optional filter, and students get a lower buyer fee.
Can I negotiate the price?
Yes, that's the point. Buyers send an offer and sellers can accept, decline or counter, all inside the in-app chat. Counter-offer rounds are capped at five so negotiations end somewhere.
How do auctions work?
A seller sets a starting price, an optional hidden reserve and a duration. Bidding needs a funded wallet: your highest bid is moved into a reserved balance rather than charged, and it's released the instant someone outbids you. A bid in the final two minutes extends the auction to five, up to three times. The winner has one hour to complete payment, captured from that reserved balance.
What is the GrabAm wallet for?
It's a stored-value balance you top up by mobile money, used to bid on auctions, pay for orders and receive refunds. Your balance has two parts: available, which you can spend or withdraw to a registered MoMo number, and reserved, which is committed to a live bid. It isn't a bank account and earns no interest.
What if the item isn't what was listed?
Don't confirm delivery. Use the in-app dispute or report option instead. That keeps the escrow funds held while the issue is reviewed, rather than releasing them to the seller. See the Buyer Protection Policy.
How and when do sellers get paid?
Once the buyer confirms delivery, funds are released from escrow directly to the seller's registered mobile money account, less fees. Sellers pay no commission; the fee is on the buyer's side.
Do I need to install anything?
No. GrabAm runs in your browser at app.grabam.com. No app store, no download.

More in the Help Centre, or contact us.
